The Texas College coaching staff dialed up numbers, piled up paperwork and finally filed away a sizeable signing class after a busy workday spilling past sundown. 

The Steers garnered a massive recruiting class of 30 members-plus, and featuring four 300-pounders, on National Signing Day Wednesday. 

The 32 commitments consisted of one local player, Robert E. Lee running back Aneas Sutton, one of 20-plus prepsters choosing the Steers. The rest of the class comprised seven transfers — four from junior colleges and two within the NAIA.  

James David Love, a defensive back transferring from Oklahoma State, highlighted the group. Love, a native of Edmond Okla., constituted a diverse group featuring players from Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. 

Nine of the future Steers attended a signing ceremony on campus, among them a pair of Northwestern Oklahoma State transfers and defensive lineman Chris Marez, who played for one of nation’s top JUCOs last season at Arizona Western. 

The letters of intent bind players to playing for Texas College and the Central States Football League, with the student-athletes free to play outside the conference or risk sitting out one year. 

TC addressed its biggest concern up front with six of the recruits offensive linemen. 

“Offensive line was a big concern,” Texas College coach George Cumby. “Our freshman group should be really talented. We have high expectations.”

TC plans to keep recruiting through the summer in hopes of turning around a winless season. 

“Until the kids actually show up on the campus we don’t have them,” said Cumby, whose program awards a handful of athletic scholarships. “We’re always trying to find extra people that’s out there looking for a place.”

STEER SCOOP: Texas College’s 2012 tentative schedules has the Steers playing non-conference games against Alcorn State, Hardin-Simons, Incarnate Word, McMurry and Southern Arkansas. TC plays conference games against Bacone, Langston, Southwestern Assemblies of God and Wayland Baptist. Original CSFL members Northwestern Oklahoma State and Southern Nazarene both begin competing in NCAA Division II next season.
