ATLANTA — Gilmer Buckeyes quarterback Luke Turner created a batch of rabbit stew Thursday night, running for three touchdowns and throwing two more as Gilmer dominated Atlanta 42-21 in the season opener.

The Buckeyes racked up a 22-0 lead at halftime before Atlanta’s offense, paced by running back Corion Webster, rebounded somewhat. Webster finished with two TDs and 200 yards on 18 carries.

But the sharp-shooting Turner, meantime, completed 16 of 20 passes for 207 yards while running 113 yards on 15 carries.

Gilmer opened fire quickly, scoring on its first two possessions on Turner’s 4-yard pass to Traylon Webb and the quarterback’s 2-yard keeper.

In the second quarter, Gilmer running back Gavin Holt bounced five yards for the next TD. For an encore, Holt ran over a two-point conversion after teammate Pablin Olivares had kicked two PATs.

But in the third quarter, the Rabbits charged out like a SWAT team, taking the kickoff and steaming 69 yards in only three plays to score on quarterback Lee Raley’s 10-yard dash. Chris Ibarra airlifted the first of his three PATs with 11:03 remaining in the third quarter.

But Gilmer fired right back, driving 73 yards and scoring on Turner’s 7-yard keeper before the PAT kick failed.

Atlanta rallied yet again in spectacular fashion as, on the second play following the kickoff, Webster whizzed 80 yards for a TD with 9:05 left in the third.

But Turner ran in three yards for another touchdown with 3:34 left in the third before hurling a 7-yard pass to Webb for Gilmer’s final TD with 4:28 left in the game. Olivares kicked both PATs.

Webster scored from three yards out for the game’s final score with 2:38 left.
