MARSHALL — Mineola did not have an answer for New Boston tailbacks Damien Haskins and Shakeem Jefferson as the two combined to rush for 319 yards and score four touchdowns in a 49-3 mauling on Friday in a Class 2A Division I bi-district playoff game at Maverick Stadium.

New Boston (9-2) advances to face Pottsboro (9-1) next week in an area round playoff game at a time and site still to be determined.

The Yellowjackets (8-3) made it 14-3 early in the second quarter on a 36-yard field goal by Matt Shade, but it would be the only points New Boston’s defense allowed. The Lions (9-2) also forced three Mineola turnovers, one of those returned for a touchdown, and recovered an onside kick.

Mineola quarterback Eric Galaz passed for 61 yards and rushed for 14 while Dac Shaw led the Yellowjackets with 58 yards in the loss.

Haskins totaled 179 yards on just 12 carries with Jefferson racking up 140 on 20 carries. Haskins started the New Boston scoring with a 53-yard touchdown run with 5:43 to play in the first quarter. After New Boston gambled and won on a fake punt from its own 15, Jefferson went around the edge for a 26-yard scoring run and a 14-0 lead with 10:55 remaining in the half.

Shade’s field goal made it 14-3, but New Boston quickly answered with a 2-yard TD pass from Mason Thomas to Ty Jones.

Things went from bad to worse seconds later when Mineola fumbled and New Boston defensive lineman L.J. Carroll scooped it up and rumbled in for a 7-yard touchdown.
