Robert E. Lee senior Jack Calhoun drilled a 3-pointer to open the Red Raiders scoring Tuesday on Hoopsapalooza Night at REL Varsity Gym.
It was the first of 12 treys the Red Raiders made as the home side overwhelmed visiting Hallsville for a 68-30 win in front of a raucous crowd.
Calhoun made three 3-pointers with senior Caleb Johnston leading all players with 20 points helped by 6 treys.
“We’ve been working hard in the offseason with our shooting and making sure we get shots up,” said Johnston, with six rebounds, two steals, two blocks and two assists. “It was a fun atmosphere with the student section pretty lively.”
Calhoun finished with 12 points while fellow senior D’Varius Taylor tallied nine points and three rebounds. Senior post John Brattlof led the Red Raiders (1-0) on the glass with nine rebounds to go along with fie points.
Hallsville had eight different players score points, but none surpassed six with Tyler Espree doing that courtesy of a late fourth-quarter trey when the game had lone since been decided. Nolan Johnson also had three steals for the Bobcats (0-1).
The Red Raiders used treys from Calhoun and Pulliam to push out to a 13-9 lead entering the second quarter. Johnston missed his first 3-point attempt in the opening frame.
He proceeded to make six of his next eight from beyond the arc.
“I got on a lucky streak I think. I just started hitting shots. They were falling,” Johnston said.
A basket by Hallsville’s Andrew Howell cut the Red Raiders’ lead to 13-11 with 7:29 to go in the second period.
Hallsville did not score another field goal until the 5:44 mark of the third period.
Meanwhile, Johnston and Co. heated up from downtown and left the Bobcats in their wake. Johnston drained two from long distance as part of a 16-0 second-period run and 30-13 halftime lead.
Johnston then started the second half with a trey to make it 33-13.
“I think our nerves settled down (in the second) and we started get in the flow of the game and get ourselves under control and make shots,” Johnston said.
Johnson finally ended the Hallsville drought with a trey, but the damage had been done.
The Red Raiders went into the fourth period with a 45-23 lead, and thanks to back-to-back treys by Johnston to start the final frame, built a 51-24 lead with 7:34 remaining.
Many of the starters were rested in the final minutes of the fourth period, but the hot shooting continued as Lee made 9 of 11 from the floor to complete a 38-point victory.
Lee will be on the road Friday to take on the Lufkin Panthers. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Lufkin High School.
