FORT WORTH — Brook Hill rallied from eight points down in the final 2:30 to force overtime against Fort Worth Christian, but couldn’t complete the rally in the extra session, falling 27-21 Friday in a TAPPS Division II area playoff game at Barrow Field.

The Guard (6-5) led the Cardinals 13-7 at halftime, but two fourth-quarter touchdowns from the home side gave Fort Worth Christian an eight-point lead with time running out.

Brook Hill was able to send it to overtime on Gabe Lucio’s second touchdown run. Then Grant Hanks connected with Jacob Dumesnil for the two-point conversion pass to tie the game at 21-21.

In the extra session, Brook Hill got the ball first and was stopped. Fort Worth Christian (8-3) got the ball to the 2-yard line on its first play and punched it in for the game winner after that.

“We made several plays in the second half and got it into overtime and just ran out of gas,” Brook Hill coach Bobby Brasher said.

“Hanks played well and the kids played well. We just came up one play short.”

Hanks finished with 180 yards passing, most of that going to sophomore receiver Seth Brasher, who had four catches for 128 yards, highlighted by a 68-yard score in the first half. Lucio finished with 54 yards and two touchdowns.

Last year, the Cardinals defeated Grace Community 35-34 in overtime in the same playoff round.

 

Midland Christian 56, Grace Community 0

MIDLAND — Grace Community’s season came to a close on Friday night with a 56-0 loss to Midland Christian in a TAPPS Division II area playoff game.

The Mustangs (11-0), the two-time defending state champs, led 42-0 at halftime

The Cougars finished the year 7-4.

 

McKinney North 26, Texas High 14

LONGVIEW — McKinney North’s Ronald Jones rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries to lead the Bulldogs to a 26-14 victory over Texas High in a Class 4A Division I bi-district playoff on Friday night

Quarterback Ben Dutze completed 10 of 13 passes for 128 yards and a score for McKinney North (7-4), which awaits the winner of today’s John Tyler-Mansfield Legacy in the area round.

The Tigers (9-2) saw their seven-game winning streak snapped. Their last loss came to Robert E. Lee.

Texas High running back Tre Walker managed just 44 yards on 11 carries in his final high school game. He also caught four passes for 52 yards.

 

Wylie 42, Marshall 21

MIDLOTHIAN — Wylie’s Carsen Cook completed 10 of 20 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns and Kameron Kelly had 154 yards of total offense and touchdowns rushing and receiving as the Pirates beat Marshall 42-21 on Friday at Midlothian Stadium in the Class 4A Division I bi-district playoffs.

Wylie (7-4) advance to face Mansfield next week in area play.

The Pirates outgained Marshall (3-8) 446-308.

Mavericks sophomore quarterback Justin Hart was lost in the first quarter with a broken ankle but Tanner Arst picked up the slack with 11 of 19 passing for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow senior Mitchell Leonard had five receptions for 120 yards in his final game while Jauque Kuykendall ran for 70 yards.

Kevin Tran scored from three yards out less than three minutes into the third quarter to increase Wylie’s lead to 28-0 as he was one of four Pirates running backs to reach the end zone.

 

White Oak 44, East Chambers 14

SAN AUGUSTINE — The White Oak Roughnecks drilled the East Chambers Buccaneers 44-14 and took their first step in the Class 2A Division I playoffs on Friday.

White Oak dominated the game in all aspects from the opening kickoff until the final seconds ticked off.

The Roughnecks were merciless in the first half of play and scored on offense and defense. They scored four offensive touchdowns, two defensive touchdowns and Jack Rogers kicked a 23-yard field goal, which was about the only time the Buccaneers managed to stop a Roughneck drive.

The ‘Necks’ first score came on their opening possession. They took the kickoff and promptly marched 76 yards in six plays. Riley Lakin ran the ball in from 10 yards out with slightly more than two minutes elapsed.

Forty-four seconds later Jansen McCurdy intercepted a Brandon Johnson pass and ran it back 60 yards for the score.

 

Carthage 49, Mexia 6

RUSK — Carthage opened the postseason by dominating Mexia 49-6 in the bi-district round of the Class 3A Div. I playoffs Friday at Eagle Stadium.

The Bulldogs (10-1) scored seven touchdowns in the first half including five in the first quarter.

Carthage moves on to the area round next Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Corsicana against the winner of the Navasota-Waco Robinson game, which is set to kick off today.

Blake Bogenschutz finished with 139 yards passing and four touchdowns. Okeeron Rutherford caught three passes, all for scores, and 32 yards. Guinn led with five catches for 54 yards.

Tevin Pipkin had a game-high 109 yards on six carries. Carthage ran for 253 yards as a team.

“It was a total team effort,” Carthage head coach Scott Surratt said. “We’re still leaning on our offensive line and they dominated … I thought we executed for the most part and the defense played great.”

The Bulldogs scored on their third play from scrimmage when Bogenschutz hit Rutherford on a 10-yard pass for the touchdown.

Mexia fumbled on their next offensive play and Bogenschutz found Rutherford again, this time from nine yards outs, to give Carthage a 14-0 with 9:09 left in the first quarter.

The Blackcats early woes continued with an errant snap that rolled near the goal line following the kickoff. Christian Allison picked the ball up at the one-yard line and scored for Carthage.

The Bulldogs forced a Mexia punt six plays later and put together a 69-yard scoring drive. From their own 31, Pipkin ran for 10, 9, and 20 yards for a touchdown.

Bryian Bolton moved Carthage across midfield with a 31-yard run and Bogenschutz completed a pass to Keldrean Strong before Pipkin’s 20-yard score.

The final touchdown of the first quarter came after an interception by Tee Goree, which set the Bulldogs up at the Mexia 14-yard line. Marquis Guinn caught a pass for four yards and Bolton ran it in from 10 yards out with 2:08 left in the quarter.

 

Garrison 17, New Diana 14

CARTHAGE — Senior Cameron Rodriguez drilled a 27-yard field goal with one second left on the clock to give the Garrison Bulldogs a 17-14 victory over the New Diana Eagles on Friday night in Class 2A Division II bi-district play at Bulldog Stadium.

Garrison (11-0) advances to next week’s second round. New Diana, which made the playoffs for the first time since 2009, finished its season at 7-4.

The Bulldogs controlled the fourth quarter after trailing 14-7 heading into the final period.

A 12-play, 81-yard drive — capped off by Logan Clark’s 9-yard scoring run — enabled Garrison to tie the game at 14-14.

The Eagles managed to move into Bulldogs territory with four minutes to play, but the drive stalled on a failed fourth-down attempt.

The teams traded punts and Garrison took over on its own 45 with 1:10 left in the game. Junior quarterback Andrew Russell found junior tailback Demetrius Bennett on two key passes during the drive. The second was a 24-yard screen that put the ball on the 10 with 8 seconds to go. Russell quickly spiked the ball with 5 seconds remaining, setting up Rodriguez’ heroics.

The Eagles seized control in the third quarter, returning from halftime facing a 7-0 deficit. Clark fumbled on the first play of the half for the Bulldogs and sophomore Cody Holland quickly pounced on the ball for New Diana. Six plays later, tailback Garrett Barton punched the ball into the end zone from 6 yards out, knotting the score at 7-7.

Garrett finished the evening with 89 yards on 20 carries.

Clark bobbled the ensuing kickoff and was forced to chase it toward his own end zone. He fell on the ball at the 1. After a first down the Garrison drive stalled as New Diana forced a punt. The snap on the punt went over Rodriguez’s head and Eagles sophomore Skylar Simpson recovered in the end zone.

Kelton Ryan’s extra point gave New Diana a 14-7 lead, which it would maintain until the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs had a balanced offensive attack, gaining 128 yards in both the rushing and the passing game. Clark and Bennett paced the Bulldogs with 77 and 75 yards rushing, respectively. The Eagles gained 211 yards, almost all on the ground.

Junior quarterback Jobie Ainsworth added 73 yards on 18 carries, helping New Diana gain 185 in the rushing attack. The Garrison defense held New Diana to two pass completions on the evening, while the Eagles defense forced four Bulldogs turnovers — including an interception by junior Tyler Morgan.
