Whitehouse coasts by Corsicana

CORSICANA — Whitehouse used a big second quarter to pull away for a 45-14 victory against Corsicana in a District 16-4A football matchup Friday at Tiger Stadium.
The third-ranked Wildcats scored 22 points in the quarter to take a 35-7 lead into the break, which helped improve them to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in district entering next week’s showdown with John Tyler. Corsicana fell to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in district.
Wildcats quarterback Patrick Mahomes finished 21 of 29 for 274 yards and three touchdowns, plus ran for a 31-yard score. The senior threw all three TDs in the first half, during which the Wildcats scored twice on special teams.
His top receivers were Ryan Cheatham (6 catches, 45 yards, TD) and Drew Smith (4-56-1). Jaylon Dews also caught a TD pass.
Corsicana quarterback Devontay Bell ran for 184 yards on 22 carries to help the Tigers finish with 352 team rushing yards.
Whitehouse scored twice in the final 4:12 to take a 35-7 lead into the break, thanks to Mahomes hitting Dews for a 24-yard TD and Reggie Long returning a blocked punt (Kostin Wallace got the block) for another 24-yard TD.
The Wildcats and their up-tempo offense had the ball less than five minutes in the half, but still managed to score three times; the other two TDs coming on special teams, the first a 68-yard punt return by Jake Parker.
Mahomes passed for three TDs in the half, also hitting Drew Smith for 10 yards and Ryan Cheatham for 11 yards.
Bell had 20 carries for 154 yards during the half.
