After one of their most successful seasons in about a decade, coach Danny Palmer and his Tyler Junior College Apaches were rewarded with a bowl bid on Tuesday.

The No. 13-ranked Apaches (8-2) were selected to play in the Fifth Annual Football Capital of Kansas Bowl in Pittsburg, Kan., Dr. Tim Drain, TJC athletic director, announced. The bowl game was formerly known as the Citizen’s Bank Bowl.

Tyler will play Garden City (Kan.) Community College on Sunday, Dec. 8. Kickoff at Carnie Smith Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Broncbusters are 2-7 on the season after forfeiting three games. According to the NJCAA, a technical ruling resulting from a random NJCAA audit earlier this season forced Garden City to forfeit three of its wins over Independence (Kan.), Cisco and Air Force Prep.

The audit revealed that one student athlete, whose name was not released, participated in the 2013 football season, but was ineligible because GCCC did not have a transfer waiver form on file.

Bowl officials are excited to match a Texas team with a Kansas squad.

“Going into our fifth year with the bowl, the mission for the selection committee is always the same; attract the best possible matchup on the field to give the fans a great game, I think the Apaches and the Broncbusters will be a great game,” said bowl director J.D. Ettore.

Ticket prices are $12 (general admission) and $5 (students K-12 and college students with ID).

Along with TJC, fellow Southwest Junior College Football Conference members Trinity Valley Community College and Navarro College will also go bowling.

TVCC, No. 6 with a 9-2 record and the SWJCFC champion, will play in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in Copperas Cove. The Cardinals will face the No. 12 Mesa (Ariz.) Thunderdbirds (8-2) on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Bulldawg Stadium. Kickoff is 11 a.m.

The Cardinals, who beat Navarro 56-45 in the SWJCFC title game on Saturday, last appeared in the HOT bowl in 2002, recording a 33-22 win against Jones County (Miss.).

No. 16 Navarro (8-3) will play No. 14 Hinds (Miss.) (7-2) in the Brazos Valley Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Merrill Green Stadium in Bryan. Kickoff is 11 a.m.

The NJCAA national championship game will pit No. 1 Georgia Military (11-0) against No. 2 East Mississippi (11-0) in the Mississippi Bowl on Sunday, Dec. 8. The contest is scheduled for Biloxi Indians Stadium in Biloxi, Miss.
