ABILENE — East Texas lifters competed in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Meet over the weekend at the Taylor County Expo Center.

Lifters competed in Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 and Division 4 in various weight classes, compiling a total weight from three lifts — squat, bench press and deadlift.

Athens’ Daniel Castaneda placed second in the 181-pound class in Division 2 with a total of 1,775 pounds (685 squat, 430 deadlift, 660 bench).

Lindale’s Sam Vasquez recorded a third-place finish in the 114-pound class in Division 2 with a total of 970 pounds (365 squat, 245 bench, 360 deadlift).

Brownsboro’s Ethan Ramsey recorded a third-place finish in the 123-pound class in Division 2 with a total of 1,060 pounds (400 squat, 260 bench, 400 deadlift).

Tristen Taylor, also known as “The Lion King,” achieved a personal best total of 1,640 pounds, Tyler High Coach Keith Guthrie said.

“He attempted to break the state deadlift record of 740 pounds in the 275 pound class with a lift of 745 pounds but was unable to complete it,” Guthrie said. “We had an outstanding 2024-2025 season.”
