Carlton’s 68 moves him into lead at amateur

Cypress’ Tim Carlton fired a second-round 68 to grab the lead at the Texas Golf Association’s Senior Amateur Championship on Saturday at Willow Brook Country Club. 

Carlton, a two-time winner of Willow Brook’s club championship (1982 and ‘85, enters today’s round at 3-under par following four birdies on the back nine. He has a one-stroke lead over Irving’s Mike Peck, who shot a second-round 71.



 “I hit the ball more solidly and I have putted well for both days,” Carlton said.

 Opening-round leader Lelan Chiles is in a four-way tie for third at 1 under following Saturday’s 73. Also at 1 under are Tyler’s Jimmy Wheeler, (72-69) Montgomery’s Tom McGraw (72-69) and Wichita Falls’ Bill Holstead (71-70).

 Other East Texans who survived the cut are Tyler’s Jerry Hudgins (74-70—144), Lufkin’s John Kennedy (74-72—146), Tyler’s Reggie Howell (74-72—146) and Tyler’s Steve Duffey (75-74-149).

 In the Super Senior division, Dallas’ Chip Stewart is atop the leaderboard at 3 over following rounds of 73 and 72. His closest competitors are San Antonio’s Mike Arnold (70-76—146), McKinney’s Gary Kirwan (73-73—146), Tyler’s Andy Wall (76-71—147) and Georgetown’s Don Grider (75-72—147). 

East Texans who made the cut are Longview’s Coy Jones (77-78—155), Whitehouse’ Jon Schreiber (78-78—156) and Tyler’s Richard Ellis (80-78—158).
