Theater Near You, August 30

Here’s what’s coming to a theater near you this weekend.

“Getaway”

What’s it about? A former professional race car driver, Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke), must race against the clock to accomplish tasks for a mysterious man who has kidnapped his wife.

Will it be good? The trailers all make this look pretty generic, but reading up on the making of the film has me intrigued. Apparently the director filmed many of the chase scenes gonzo style, attaching small HD cameras to the car and then driving recklessly through real traffic. Sounds just crazy enough to be entertaining on a surface level.

Most Popular

Rated PG-13 for intense action, violence and mayhem throughout, some rude gestures, and language.

“One Direction: This Is Us”

What’s it about? A documentary/concert film about the English-Irish boy band that has taken the world by storm and garnered a veritable army of hardcore fans.

Will it be good? I honestly don’t know if the term “good” can really apply to a film like this. The screaming legions of fans aren’t looking for a traditionally “good” documentary, they just want their favorite boy band up on the big screen. Anyone who isn’t a screaming teenybopper probably won’t care enough to check this out. Personally, I’m a little intrigued, if only because these guys seem to have exploded out of nowhere and I know absolutely nothing about them.

Rated PG for mild language.
