LINDALE — Following last week’s second-round playoff win, Lindale boys soccer coach Jason Lawless reflected on past years. He brought up 2009, during which the Eagles finished a victory shy of reaching state.

“It feels good,” said Lawless, referring to returning to the third round for the first time since that memorable 25-1-1 campaign.

Tonight, Lindale will try to move another step and advance to the regional quarterfinals. The Eagles (20-5-6) meet Pine Tree (17-7-3) in the Class 4A Region II sectional playoffs at 8 p.m. from LHS’s Eagle Stadium.

The game, a rematch of a 2009 regional semifinal from which the Eagles prevailed in dramatic fashion, is the second contest of a doubleheader that also features the Whitehouse (12-8-1) and Pine Tree (22-1-1) girls, which take the field at 6 p.m. Each winner will advance to next week’s regional quarterfinals.

Lindale, which hasn’t lost since falling to Mount Pleasant in early January, advanced to sectionals with a 2-0 victory against Texas High last Friday in Mount Pleasant. The Eagles got two close-range looks at the goal for their two scores, which were recorded by juniors Timmy Moyer and Jesse Emberley.

Moyer’s goal, which followed a throw in from the corner, occurred in the 17th minute of the opening half to give Lindale a 1-0 lead. Emberley increased the advantage to 2-0 about 10 minutes later, dribbling past the last defender and faking out the goalkeeper for an open net.

In the second half, Lindale limited Texas High to zero shots on goal after Eagles goalkeeper successfully defended five shots during the first 40 minutes.

Pine Tree, meanwhile, handed defending regional champion Mount Pleasant its first loss of the season with a shootout victory in the area round. The Pirates outscored the Tigers 3-1 in the shootout after the teams ended regulation tied at 2-2.

The winner advances to meet either Dallas Samuell or North Dallas in the regional quarterfinals.

GIRLS GAME

Whitehouse faced little pressure in the area round against Liberty-Eylau, coasting to a 11-0 victory last week at the Longview High School soccer field. The LadyCats will be seeking a measure of revenge against the Lady Pirates, who eliminated them from the playoffs last season in the sectional round.

Pine Tree posted a 4-1 victory against Pleasant Grove in the area round.

The winner will advance to take on either Waxahachie or Corsicana in the regional quarterfinals.
