District 16-4A sends several to regionals from area meet

LANCASTER — Lancaster proved faster and an area of concern, as expected, for District 16-4A.

The host school located on the southern tip of Dallas raced their way to team titles and a sweep of all six relays to highlight the Class 4A District 15-16 area track and field meet at Beverly D. Humphrey Tiger Stadium.

John Tyler’s Andre Jefferson qualified for regionals in four events, the Lady Lions’ Tanisha Vaughn earned a trip to Arlington in three races, and Jacksonville’s Dadria Franklin finished an eventful day with two individual gold medals to lead the East Texas caravan in the newly-created meet.

The top-four finishers continue their seasons at next week’s Class 4A Region II meet on the UT-Arlington campus.

Lindale’s duo of Travicia Acy (high jump) and Mackenzie Bateman (pole vault) teamed up for gold medals while Whitehouse’s Samantha Anderson discovered the precious medal with a win in the 800-meter run.

Most Popular

After reaching state in 3A last year, Acy ascended 5 feet, 8 inches to get one step closer to reaching Austin in 4A. Bateman beat all competitors with a height of 10-6, winning by a full foot.

“We competed great today,” Lindale girls coach Meghan Koonce said. “We knew it would be tough competition. I’m just proud of them and look forward to the next stage.”

John Tyler’s girls gave the team title a run, finishing third with 61 points behind Lancaster (170) and Mansfield Legacy (76).

Lancaster won six girls events, including all three relays. Eboni Coby carried Lancaster with a triple-gold effort in the 100-meter dash and 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

The Lancaster boys mimicked their counterparts, winning seven gold medals and all three relays to pile up 146 points. Whitehouse tied Nacogdoches for third with 62 points, and JT took fifth with 47.

Franklin elevated 6-8 to win the high jump and 6-8. The three-sport start soared 47-3 to claim the triple jump.

Jefferson returned to his dominant ways in the long jump. Jefferson, after nearly going 25 feet to win the national indoor title, jumped 24-8ᄒ to take first by 16 inches. Jefferson placed fourth in the high jump to extend his season in two field events. He later transferred his talents to the track, running blistering legs on JT’s silver-medalist 4×100 relay and bronze-medalist 4×200.

The Lions entered the meet with the nation’s 53rd-fastest time in the 100 and clocked a 42.55 to trail Lancaster (42.09), who has one of the country’s top-20 marks.

The JT girls gained a boost with freshman Dalelasha Rollins’ first-place performance in the triple jump (36-5 1/2).

Vaughn sped to a second-place finish in the 200 (25.58) and anchored JT’s 4×200 to second (1:42.05) and the 4×100 to third (48.68).

Briana Callier competed in five events for the Lady Lions, leaving with two regional berths in the triple jump (fourth) and as a member of the 4×100.

Whitehouse advanced 11 entries to next week’s two-day regional meet (April 26-27) at UT-Arlington, led by double-qualifiers Justin Dunning (110 hurdles, 4×400), Troy Hayden (1600, 3200), Colton Lampin (300 hurdles, 4×400), Tex Pierce (800, 4×400) and Shemar Smith (100, 4×400)
