Jacobi throws one-hitter as Gorman blanks All Saints, 11-0

Strong in the circle and patient at the plate, Katelin Jacobi summed up Bishop Gorman’s win over All Saints on Friday.
Jacobi allowed one hit and one walk in a six-inning shutout and had a hit, two walks and three runs as the Lady Crusaders defeated the Lady Trojans 11-0 in the first game of a baseball/softball doubleheader on Black Out Cancer Night at All Saints.
Jacobi struck out three and didn’t allow a hit until Madison Stewart singled up the middle in the fifth, just out of the reach of Jacobi.
“She threw a great game,” Gorman coach Brittany Jordan said. “She kept them all off balance, hit her spots very well and she just kept throwing, stayed strong through the entire game.”
Her one-hitter was aided by a strong Lady Crusaders defense. Sarah Kent made a nice grab on a well-hit line drive to center field by Maddie Smith and second baseman Kimi Prevost made a leaping grab to rob McKenzie Johnson of a hit.
“Defense was great behind her,” Jordan said.
“They made every play they were supposed to make. They helped her out on a couple hits, kind of kept her going, kept her in the game. Defense played very strong behind her; they didn’t fall asleep. They did great.”
Jordan told her team to be “patiently aggressive” at the plate as Gorman racked up nine walks.
“We played against them before and we’ve been over aggressive and got down in the count,” she said. “We just, we told them unless it’s your pitch to hit you’re not swinging.”
Jacobi got the offense started as she started the game off with a walk.
After Prevost was hit by a pitch, Becca Waters and Rachel Carney each drew walks, the latter of which pushed Jacobi across for the first run. The Lady Crusaders scored two runs without a hit to give Jacobi a lead before she took the circle for the first time.
Gorman tallied two of its five hits in a three-run third. The rally started with a single from Rachel Carney and was finished by a two-run double from Angela Carney.
The Lady Crusaders put the game away with a five-run sixth, which was initiated by a lead-off single from Madi Lamance, the only hit of the frame. Gorman drew four more walks to take an 11-0 lead.
Jacobi worked her fourth 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth to close out the win.
All Saints starter Smith finished with 11 strikeouts and drew the only walk from Jacobi. Smith also stole a base, as did Kali Ridley, who reached on an error prior to Stewart’s hit, though the pair was stranded on the corners.
Gorman will return to action on Monday to complete a suspended game with Grace Community. The game will be concluded at Grace’s softball field at 3:30 p.m. before the two teams move to Gorman’s field for a second game at 5 p.m.
All Saints will play at Carrollton Prince of Peace on Monday.
