Jacksonville scored three runs in the first inning and held off several John Tyler scoring chances to defeat the Lions 7-2 Tuesday at Mike Carter Field.
John Tyler drops to 0-3 in District 16-4A.
“We hit the ball all over the place and didn’t get the big hit, but that was the best my team has played all year,” said JT coach Chuck Isaac.
“Defensively, we hadn’t been so hot this year, but tonight we made three errors. A lot of people would be dissatisfied with that, but I am proud of the way they competed and we got after it tonight.”
The Indians changed pitchers in the second inning and Mason Smith went the rest of the way to get the win, allowing one run while scattering six hits.
John Tyler reliever Nate Jacobs allowed three runs on five hits with starter Jeremy Wilson taking the loss.
The Lions pounded out two runs on eight hits, but stranded nine runners. JT left the bases loaded in the first, runners at second and third in the second and third in the third inning.
“Bases loaded there in the first and we leave it there and then runners at second and third in the second and we just don’t get a hit when it counted,” Isaac said.
The Indians had seven different players drive in runs, led by Brett Eckles, who went 2 for 3 with two singles, two runs scored and an RBI.
John Tyler received doubles from Dustin Smith and Andre Crawford with Nate Jacobs singling and scoring in the first and courtesy runner Jerren Jones racing home on a sacrifice fly from Jaylen Tennison.
John Tyler returns to action Thursday with a road game at Nacogdoches. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
