Spring cleaning residents can take advantage of a Smith County program to access landfills free of charge.

Vouchers now are available for Smith County residents wanting to rid themselves of trash, debris and bulky items, such as old couches, for free.

The countywide clean-up will continue through Saturday. Vouchers give residents access to bring trash and bulky items to Greenwood Farms Landfill free of charge.

The Smith County Environmental Crimes Unit, precinct constables and Commissioners Court are working together to host the event. The county will provide the public with vouchers good for up to three cubic yards per household — about a full-sized truck bed.

Vouchers are available at all justice of the peace and constable precinct offices or the Commissioners Court office inside the Smith County Courthouse Annex from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Businesses may not participate in the program.

Residents can access the landfill with vouchers from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 6:30 a.m. to noon Saturday during the event. The vouchers come with a list of items that the Greenwood Farms Landfill will not take. Directions and a map also are provided.

Items not accepted include hazardous waste, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, gasoline, oils, paint, acid, batteries, asbestos, Freon, whole tires, refrigerators, freezers, televisions and computers.

Residents disposed of more than 300 tons of trash, debris and bulk items through the program since 2009.
