Cold and wet today

A strong cold front will move across the region today. Temperatures will be in the low 60s this morning and are expected to fall into the 40s late in the morning and into the 30s during the afternoon. A strong upper level disturbance also will accompany the front. Surface forcing with the cold front and strong lift from the disturbance is expected to produce strong to potentially severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall possible.
Once the front moves across the region strong Northwest winds will usher in very cold air for this time of the year. Rain is expected to continue into the overnight hours with temperatures to fall to below freezing providing a chance for freezing rain and sleet. Freezing precipitation is highly dependent on the speed of the upper level disturbance and the initiation of freezing temperatures. A winter weather advisory is in effect from 6:00 PM tonight until 6:00 AM on Monday morning. Remain alert to fast changing weather conditions later today.
