In a game that lasted over three hours during a chilly Wednesday night, Tyler Junior College defeated Texas College 13-4 at Mike Carter Field.
The game featured a combined 48 players before the night was over. The Apaches sent 27 batters to the plate during the third, fourth, and fifth innings and scored five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.
TJC took an early lead in the first beginning with a triple by Manny Galvan before Zane Otten was hit with a pitch. Otten then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Eric Stegent then hit a grounder to third base. Third baseman Garrett Hackley fielded the ball and threw home to get Galvan out at the plate. With runners on the corners, Steers’ starter Brandon Signs threw a wild pitch allowing Otten to score and moving Stegent to second. However, a strikeout ended the inning.
The Apaches tacked on two more runs to hold a 3-0 lead before breaking the game open in the fourth.
Texas College got on the board in the fifth when John Negron walked and eventually coming home. The Steers scored three more in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Apaches.
TJC next travels Beeville to take on Coastal Bend College in a three-game set starting with a single game at 1 p.m. Friday. TC will also be on the road against Houston-Victoria in a three-game set beginning at 1 p.m. Friday.
