Junior golfers enjoy perfect day at HTCC

On a Chamber of Commerce-type day, junior golfers tackled the lush fairways and smooth greens of Hollytree Country Club.

Sunshine and breezes greeted the linksters Saturday for the first round of the 2014 Azalea Trail Junior Golf Classic.



Garrett Glanton, of Richardson fired a 2-under 70 to pave the way in Boys 15-18. He is three strokes ahead of defending champion Blaine Hale Jr., of Dallas. Third place belongs to McKinney’s Jack Howes (74) with a pair of golfers tied for fourth with 75s — Andrew Lindberg, of Coppell and Carson Horak, of Wylie.

Area golfers just a few strokes out include Jacksonville’s Cameron Brown (T6, 76), along with Sulphur Springs’ Cody Blackmon and Tylerites Jackson Smith and Andrew Bloch (T8, 77).

In the girls 15-18, Katy Goen, of Wichita Falls, leads after carding an 85. Hanna Harrison, of Plano, is second at 90, followed Coppell’s Payton Cupstid (91) and Lindale’s Kennedy Wheeler (95).

Tyler’s Jacob Cole and Garland’s Sam Jenkins are tied for the top spot in Boys 9-10. Both carded 40s and are one stroke ahead of Gilmer’s Sam Benson.

The second and final round is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. today.

The top three finishers in each division will be awarded trophies.

One exemption into the 2014 HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship and one exemption into the 2014 Texas State Junior Championship will be awarded to the low score (two-day total) from the Boys 15-18 division.

In addition, one exemption into the 2014 HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship will be awarded to the Boys 13-14 division.

The 2014 Azalea Trail Junior Golf Classic is one of 18 playing opportunities for the Bridgestone Golf All American Tour. The tournament is conducted by the Northern Texas PGA Junior Tour and SPORTyler and presented by the Golf Academy of America.
