Ray Wiley Hubbard

Ray Wiley Hubbard, a mainstay of the Texas music scene, performs Saturday night at Liberty Hall.

Hubbard began his career as a folk singer in Oklahoma in the 1970s and gained attention after he penned “Up Against the Wall (Redneck Mother)” a hit song for Jerry Jeff Walker which helped define the Texas outlaw country music sound.

He began to gain greater attention as singer with release of his 1994 album “Loco Gringo’s Lament.”

“Hubbard has recorded albums with top producers, such as Lloyd Maines and Gurf Morlix,” Liberty Hall Manager Anne Payne said. “He has become one of the most respected artists on the modern Americana scene. He’s an audience favorite and we are thrilled to have him back at Liberty Hall.”

Hubbard will be performing songs from his newest album, “The Grifter’s Hymnal.”

“The whole idea (for ‘The Grifter’s Hymnal’) was, I really like those words, grifter and hymnal,” Hubbard said, according to a story on his website. “The grifter kind of came out of the ’20s, kind of like the con man in (the movie) “Paper Moon.” He’s not really a bad guy, because usually they would only grift people who maybe had it coming because of their own greed. I just like the idea of it.”
