HS Volleyball Roundup: JT, Lee drop season openers

Published 11:31 pm Tuesday, August 12, 2014

WHITE OAK — Robert E. Lee fell short in its season opener, falling 3-2 in a marathon at White Oak.

The Lady Raiders (0-1) rallied from 2-1 down to eventually force a fifth and deciding game, but ultimately succumbed to White Oak, 22-25, 25-15, 25-12, 14-25, 16-14 Tuesday at White Oak High School gym.

REL coach Melissa Lee said her team gave everything it had and she “couldn’t be more proud of them.”

“We had a drop-off in the second game and made a lot of mistakes, but they really came back in those last two games,” Lee said. “It was an outstanding effort for sure.”

REL senior Claire Himes led the Lady Raiders with 12 kills. Jamie Mills and Emily Starr finished with nine and seven kills, respectively.

Mills also delivered on defense with 20 digs. Libero Jamesha Hutton led the team with 23 digs. Taylor Winchester also had 20 digs with setter Genesis Borens delivering 25 assists.

Lee went out quickly and took the opening game, but missed serves and unforced errors helped White Oak win the next two games comfortably. Facing a loss, REL struck back to win the third game 25-14 and force a decider.

White Oak had one final answer to give the Lady ‘Necks a 1-0 start to their season.

“White Oak is real game smart and they would dump it and we weren’t ready for it,” Lee said. “They also had a real smart front-row setter and she could put the ball where we weren’t. But all in all we did a good job for our first time out.”

Lee next will compete in the Longview Tournament, beginning Thursday. The Lady Raiders are grouped into a pool with Nacogdoches, Gladewater and Marshall. Play will begin at 8 a.m. at Lobo Coliseum.
