Smith County announces free cleanup program

Smith County residents will have the chance to dispose of bulky items for free during the 2025 Countywide Cleanup program, running from March 31 to May 5.
The program allows each household to drop off one truckload of large items at the Greenwood Farms Landfill. Vouchers for the cleanup are available at the Courthouse Annex in Tyler and at Justice of the Peace or Constable Offices in Smith County.
The landfill, located at 12920 FM 2767 in Tyler, will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 6:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Vouchers cover the disposal of one mattress, with additional mattresses costing $50 each.
Items not accepted include hazardous waste, chemicals, certain appliances, and electronics. For more information, call 903-590-4904 or 903-590-4905.
Also during Tuesday’s commissioners court meeting, Smith County officials also declared April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, following a request from Tonya Fuller with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. In the 2024 fiscal year, there were 144,189 investigations of child abuse or neglect across Texas, with 1,368 cases in Smith County. Statewide, 53,543 children were confirmed as victims, including 735 in Smith County.
“We must all work together to strengthen our communities and build supports that are accessible, contribute to the well-being of the entire community, and keep children and families safe and together,” said County Judge Neal Franklin.
The Smith County Commissioners Court discussed renewing its contract with Teeco Safety, Inc. for fleet vehicle equipment installation. The contract, originally approved in 2022, covers upfitting services for Smith County’s fleet, including law enforcement and road department vehicles.
Additionally, the court approved the sale of fireworks for San Jacinto Day and accepted donations for County Government Month in appreciation of county employees. Smith County also received a top rating for its FY24 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report from Gollob, Morgan, Peddy.
