The meeting comes after a survey indicated that the “Junior” portion of the college’s name is a detriment to their students, according to Trellis Company which conducted the survey.
Trellis said stakeholders believe the college has outgrown the name as TJC now offers bachelor’s degrees and many of its programs are terminal. Many degree paths lead students straight into the workforce, as opposed to the college once being a hub for students preparing to transfer to a university.
The survey solicited feedback from current and future students, alumni, faculty and staff and local business leaders.
Educators were vocal about the need for a name change, with many saying a name change was in the best interest of its students. The most popular suggestion was Texas Eastern College, which is a callback to the name the college once used for its nursing school and a music school.
The public comment will be held in the TJC Board Room of the White Administrative Services building, 1327 S. Baxter Ave.
