WHITEHOUSE — Whitehouse seniors Chaez Spurlock and Darius Trimble have already made history.
Now, the powerlifting duo will look to close their careers strong at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet Saturday in Abilene.
“From what I understand, this is the first time we’ve ever had a guy qualify for state in powerlifting,” Whitehouse powerlifting coach Evan Beaton said. “We’re excited to go there and set some (personal records). We just want to make it fun and enjoy the trip.
“These are the type of kids you want in your program. It’s awesome to see all of their hard work pay off on something like this.”
Spurlock competes in the 165-pound class, and he placed second at the Division 1 Region 3 meet at Robert E. Lee High School with a total of 1,275 pounds (465 squat, 310 bench, 500 deadlift).
“It feels great to see all of the hard work paying off,” Spurlock said. “It’s really hard to make it, so I’m really proud of Darius and I.”
Spurlock said he wants to break his personal records.
Trimble competes in the 275-pound class. He placed second at the regional meet with a total of 1,525 pounds (590 squat, 360 bench and 575 deadlift).
Trimble competed in powerlifting as a sophomore but took his junior year off to focus on track and field.
After suffering an elbow injury in football season, Trimble was unsure if he would be able to lift as a senior.
When Trimble saw that Whitehouse was hosting a meet this year, he decided he wanted to compete.
“He asked if I mind if he lifted at our meet,” Beaton said. “He’s a great kid, so I didn’t hesitate. He came and lifted, and I was like holy cow, this dude has a chance. I’m really proud of how much work he’s put in for this.”
Trimble said he wants to aim for 630 on squat, 375 on bench and hopefully 600 to 620 on deadlift.
“It’s a great experience,” Trimble said. “I just want to go do my best.”
Trimble will play football and compete in track and field at Southern Arkansas University.
