CANTON — Chris Hobbs threw for 263 yards and Chris Cade went over the century mark at receiver, but Mabank’s methodical attack proved too much and spoiled the Eagles’ homecoming 42-21 Friday at Norris Birdwell Stadium.

The Panthers, who already surpassed their win total the past two years in a win last week, outscored the Eagles 28-7 in the second half after fending off two first-half deficits. Running backs Hayden Hines and Caleb Goforth led the winning side with two scores apiece as Mabank (4-0) racked up 367 total yards with just 78 of those coming through the air on 5-for-6 passing by Dahltyn McKinnley.

Canton (1-3), a District 7-4A Division II competitor, enjoyed two short leads in the opening half for a total of 7:17, but both scores were answered by the Panthers on the ensuing possessions toward a 14-14 tie at the break.

Chris Cade turned a dump off pass from Chris Hobbs into an 18-yard touchdown and 7-0 lead to cap a 13-play and 70-yard opening drive. Cade finished with 121 yards on eight receptions.

Cooper Smith ran in from six yards for a 14-7 advantage with four minutes to play before the break.

Both teams will wrap up non-district play next Friday. The Eagles will visit Quinlan Ford at 7:30 p.m. while Mabank moves on to simultaneously host Ferris.
