RAIDERS OFFENSE VS. LIONS DEFENSE: The Raider offense is ranked sixth in the district, averaging 280.6 yards per game. The Raiders have gained 661 yards rushing and 742 yards passing. … Cade Adamson is the starting quarterback, having hit on 61 of 124 passing attempts for 742 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. … The Raiders have a couple of young runners they depend on — junior Christian “Bam” Johnson (75-392, 6 TDs) and freshman Tristan Lee (24-183, 3 TDs). … Senior Xavier Smith (18-252, TD) and sophomore Josh Hollingsworth (15-151, 2 TDs) are Adamson’s favorite targets. … JT coach Ricklan Holmes has praised his defense throughout the season and the Lions turned in their best performance against Texas High. The unit is fourth in the league, giving up 338.6 yards per game. Travion Ates continues to play well for the Lions as the junior free safety was named the Peltier Kia Tyler Defensive Player of the Week for his game against Texas High. He had 16 tackles, including nine solo stops, along with an interception. Ates is averaging 11 tackles a game to lead the Lions with 55. Tyrone Williams (45), Daveon Cummings (38), D’Jonte Henderson (33), LaTavion Hawkins (27), Isaiah Johnson (23) and Kameron Mayfield (22) are next in line. … Lions picking off passes include Texas commit Kitan Crawford (2), Johnson (1), D’Jonte Henderson (1) and Ates (1).
Holmes said it: “Wylie East is a quality football team. Everybody in our district has a good team. They played us tough last year and I expect them to play us tougher this year. I believe they are a better football team this year and I expected a really competitive game come Friday in Wylie, Texas.”

Holmes said it: “The defense has really been playing well for five weeks — giving our offense the opportunity with great field position, turnovers and a lot of three-and-outs. Eventually, like last week, the offense started taking advantage.”
Did you know: This is the second meeting between the Lions and Raiders. Last year, JT scored a 51-3 homecoming win over Wylie East in Tyler. … The Raiders lost their first two games (41-24 to Mount Pleasant and 56-7 to North Forney) before winning two straight on the road (21-18 over Dallas Woodrow Wilson and Fort Worth North Side 64-31). Their winning streak was snapped by West Mesquite, 37-14, last week in Mesquite. Wylie East led 14-13 at halftime before the Wranglers put up 24 points in the second half. … The Raiders began playing football in 2010 according to Joe Lee Smith’s TexasHighSchoolFootballHistory.com. Wylie East has made five playoff appearances with one district title (2015). Wylie East has an all-time record of 54-51. … According to The Handbook of Texas Online, Wylie is on State Highway 78, some 16 miles south of McKinney in south central Collin County. It was organized in the early 1870s and originally called Nickelville, reportedly after the name of the first store. In 1886 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway laid tracks a half mile north of the original townsite. Within a year the businesses of Nickelville had moved to take advantage of the railroad and had named their new location Wylie, in honor of W. D. Wylie, a right-of-way agent for the railroad. … Wylie East High School serves mostly Wylie residents, but some students in St. Paul and Sachse. It opened in 2007 with just ninth graders. … Wylie East won the 2014 Class 5A girls state soccer championship. … The Lions began playing football in 1906 as Tyler High. They have an all-time record of 718-388-41 with 37 playoff appearances, 28 district titles, three state championships and two state runner-up trophies. The Lions’ playoff record is 59-31-3. … JT is named after President John Tyler, who was instrumental in Texas joining the union. He was the 10th president of the United States from 1841 to 1845 after briefly serving as the 10th vice president. He was elected VP on the 1840 Whig ticket with President William Henry Harrison, who died after a month in office. … Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine has JT ranked No. 27 in Class 5A Division II, up two spots after last week’s win over Texas High. … Wylie East is No. 95, down two slots from last week.
Twitter-sized preview: After starting the season 0-4, John Tyler’s spirits were lifted with the victory over Texas High. The Lions’ defense is playing well, but the offense still needs to get in gear. Wyle East needs a win to stay in the postseason hunt.
