The Texas Wounded Warriors Foundation gathered on Wednesday to honor a group of military supporters and to announce the next pro-am for the veterans in Tyler.

The meeting was held at The Cascades Golf & Country Club, which will host the pro-am on Sept. 30.

For 13th consecutive years the Hall Family of Hall Buick GMC of Tyler and Hall Chevrolet GMC of Canton has been a major sponsor of the organization. Pam Hall, Gerry Hall and Monte Hall, all with military ties, were honored by TXWWF chairman Richard Goetz for their commitment to the Foundation.

The Halls then presented a check of $18,000 to Goetz.

Goetz said the amount now tallies more than $125,000 donated by the Halls. The Halls also provide rides for the veterans and their families for various functions during the annual pro-am.

The Halls donate a portion of the sale of each vehicle sold from Hall Buick GMC of Tyler and Hall Chevrolet Buick GMC of Canton during May to the Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation.

Goetz also announced the 16th Annual Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation Tyler Pro-Am Weekend is scheduled for Sept. 28-30 in the Tyler area. He added the Pro-Am weekend will double this year from 20 warriors to 40.

On Sept. 28, Eagle’s Bluff Country Club in Bullard will host a casino party for the warriors and their spouses.

The following day on Sept. 29, the Dew Boys of Eagle’s Bluff Country Club in Bullard will conduct a scramble for the warriors.

On Sept. 30, The Cascades will host the Pro-Am with a pro and amateurs playing with each warrior. Goetz said there will be teams with a pro, two amateurs and two warriors, as well three amateurs and three warriors.

Board member Rob Shields is also arranging an assembly to honor the veterans at All Saints Episcopal School.

Sgt. Bryan Anderson (triple amputee from Chicago) is scheduled to visit and speak at the assembly.

Chairman Goetz announced two new members of the TXWFF board in Army veteran Ray Griffiss and Navy veteran Rich Bolin.

The TXWWF hosts golf events, golf schools and weekend retreats for hunting, fishing and comradery. Other pro-ams are held in Fort Worth, Amarillo, Lubbock, Prosper and Horseshoe Bay. Retreats with a spiritual emphasis are held twice a year for the warriors and their families.

Goetz said he felt the success of the TXWWF includes: “No. 1, our eyes remain focused on the warriors” and “No. 2, bringing the game of golf to our warriors.”

“When we began this, the suicide rate for the wounded warriors was around 23 percent,” he said. “Any percentage is too high, but this was unacceptable especially in this country. There was one veteran who would not leave his house for more than a year. After he was introduced to golf, he has been at every golf event. This literally changed his life.”

The mission statement of the Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation is to raise awareness, to honor, and to empower our Wounded United States Military Warriors who live in Texas and surrounding states, enabling them to assimilate back to daily life upon their return from combat. We seek to provide Wounded Veterans injured from combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan with funding to defray the basic costs of living incurred, as a result of the short and long-term care of those injuries.

The focus is to support programs and services such as the Warrior and Family Support Center in San Antonio at Brooke Army Medical Center. Additionally, huge gaps commonly exist before Veteran Affairs benefits begin for Wounded Warriors who return from Iraq or Afghanistan following combat injuries. The Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation assists wounded veterans and ensures that they and their families receive private sector support to help fill this gap. We also work closely with other agencies to provide needed services such as handicap upgrades to housing, transportation to and from medical appointments, and other needs.
