Class 3A Division II: Gunter 43, Omaha Paul Pewitt 22

Gunter, sparked by running back Peyton Lowe, rallied for three touchdowns in the second half to score a 43-22 win over Omaha Paul Pewitt on Thursday in the Class 3A Division II football game in Arlington.

The Tigers (15-1) won their second state title in four years before 15,233 fans at AT&T Stadium.

The game was tied 22-22 at halftime.

Gunter took the lead 29-22 with 5:21 on the clock in the third as Lowe scored on a 4-yard run. Logan Hubbard booted the extra point.

The Tigers went up 36-22 at 11:55 of the fourth as Bryson Rigsby scored from the 4. Hubbard made the PAT.



The final score was a 9-yard run by Lowe, followed by Hubbard’s PAT for a 43-22 advantage at 8:20 of the fourth.

Gunter running back Clayton Reed was named Offensive Most Valuable Player. He rushed for 119 yards and scored two touchdowns on 17 carries.

Rigsby (18-99, TD) and Lowe (10-88, 2 TDs) were also stellard in the backfield. Quarterback Hudson Graham was 2 of 4 for 34 yards with two interceptions.

Lowe was named Defensive MVP with 7.5 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss as the Tiger defense held the Brahmas to 174 yards of total offense.

Gunter took a 14-0 lead as Reed scored on a 12-yard dash and Graham on a 1-yard run.

Paul Pewitt (14-2) pulled within 14-8 as Cross Holder hit paydirt on a 1-yard run with Holder hitting Kadrien Johnson for the two-point conversion with 1:46 showing in the first quarter.

Gunter went up 22-8 as Reed scored on a 1-yard run and Graham rushed for the two-points at 8:46 of the second.

Johnson then got the Brahmas back in the game with a 75-yard interception return for a TD. The try for two failed, but Paul Pewitt was within 22-14. Johnson had two interceptions in the game.

Then with 10 seconds before halftime, Johnson scored from the 1 and Holder ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 22-22.

Kei’untray Hawkins led PP with 48 yards on five carries with La-Jathan Allen adding 44 yards on 15 attempts. QB Holder was 5 of 12 for 44 yards and an interception.

Tanor Mines led the Brahmas with 10 tackles with Allen adding eight. David Denton had an interception for the Tigers.

In 2016, Gunter won over Boling 43-7. In 2017, Newton downed the Tigers 40-16 in the championship.

The Brahmas were seeking their second state title. They defeated Brookshire-Royal 28-26 in the Class 2A Division I final in 1998. Paul Pewitt also finished runner-up in 1993 (Goldthwaite 21, Paul Pewitt 8 — Class 2A) and 2005 (Celina 28, Paul Pewitt 12 — Class 2A Division II).
