Three people were shot, one male killed, after a shooting incident at The Foundry Apartment Homes on 3400 Varsity Tuesday night.

The person who fired the fatal shot has not been identified, however, after the initial investigation, police told the Tyler Morning Telegraph the two or three people involved in an altercation knew each other and the person who fired the fatal shot is not a threat to others.

Tyler Police Department Lt. Eddie Sheffield said the shooting took place near building 2700 around 11:15 p.m. and two people were found when police and fire arrived at the scene.

Police said the shots were fired in the parking lot and one shot went into an apartment and injured a female. Another male showed up later at the hospital who was also shot.

Witnesses told the Tyler Paper police tried CPR on a male who died at the scene.

Police said an altercation started in the parking lot that led to the fatal shot. The woman struck as a result of the shooting was taken by emergency services to UT Health with non-life threatening injuries. Lt. Sheffield said the woman shot in the apartment “was not involved in the earlier altercation.”

Lt. Sheffield said, “A third gunshot victim later showed up at UT Health ER at 1000 South Beckham in a personal vehicle. This person is undergoing treatment and their status is unknown.”

Police will release a name of the deceased when next of kin are notified.

“There was a report of a person who ran from the scene and we know who that person is,” Lt. Sheffield told the newspaper this morning. “Nobody should be sheltered in place, we do not believe there is danger to anyone. We do know who that person is.”

Police said the meeting in the parking lot was “pre-arranged” but more details will be released when the investigation is completed.

A resident of the apartments who did not want to be named as they had no idea who the shooter is, said, “We were in the house hanging out and stuff, and there were gunshots — we didn’t know it was gunshots at the time — but it was like three (gunshots) and then it stopped, and then there were 3 more, and then it stopped, and then there were more, and it just kept going.”

The resident added, “We just waited there, thinking ‘hopefully that wasn’t gunshots.’ When we heard the sirens, we were thinking ‘hopefully nothing bad has happened,’ because they took way too long to come. It had been like 10 to 11 minutes until they got here. We came outside, you could see all the patches on him … they asked him if he was O.K., when obviously, he wasn’t O.K.”

Police were checking for video from residents and building owners around the area where the shooting took place.

Lt. Sheffield added, “At this point, detectives and crime scene personnel are processing the scene at the apartments and at the hospital. Tyler PD, Tyler Fire and UT Health EMS were assisted at the scene by UT Tyler Police.”

While The Foundry Apartment Homes are near UT-Tyler, they are not owned by the college. A video promoting the apartments shows bean bag toss, volleyball and other activities. The complex is available to rent to anyone in the community and police said it was privately owned.
