Athens edged Denver City by just more than one percent in the semifinals and then had a similar margin in the finals against El Paso Eastwood.
Nick Alvarado, the owner of txhsgbb.com, said the 64 gyms were handpicked from across the state.
“We wanted a March Madness style to the tournament and seeing a football stadium tourney from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, I wanted to do one for basketball gyms for the state,” Alvarado said. “Athens was very noticeable and stood out with its design.”
Other East Texas gyms in the competition were Texarkana Pleasant Grove, Nacogdoches Central Heights, Tenaha and Nacogdoches.
