Dozens came out Saturday morning and afternoon to visit the latest addition to the Plaza Tower’s retail shopping.

The cafe and juice bar, 1948 Coffee & Juice Co., opened Saturday to both loyal and new customers alike between neighboring shops, Andy’s Frozen Custard and True Vine Brewing Co.

Owner Samuel Richmann said he and his wife, Amber, started 1948 Coffee & Juice Co. in a vintage trailer about four years ago serving coffee, pastries and toast.

“It’s an honor to open up beside the Brookshires, Bergfelds, Andy’s and True Vine,” Richmann said. “The response has been phenomenal and we’re excited to see the growth on the square.”

Sandra Perez, of Tyler, and she heard of the care before, but Saturday was her first time as a customer.

“It looked really cool. I decided to come and I love coffee,” she said. “I can see they’re renovating the downtown area. It’s nice to see businesses come back.”

Memo Tamez, of Dallas, called 1948 a great place to bring a first date.

“It has a nice ambience. The coffee’s great,” Tamez said. “ It’s a great place to hangout. If it’s between Starbucks and here, I’m coming here.”

The Plaza Tower location offers specialty coffee, cold-pressed juice, smoothies, paninis, sandwiches, salads, toast, vegan food, organic and gluten free options, handmade goods, snacks, grab-n-go treats.

The downtown spot also has an urban market, where people can purchase produce, drinks and juices, sandwiches and ingredients used behind the counter, Richmann said.

Customer Daniel Poe, of Tyler, said he loves the new downtown location because it’s a few blocks away from his home. He added the shop has a nice aesthetic and atmosphere.

“Having something I can just walk to at a moment’s notice is great,” he said. “I like the range of the menu and the things they offer.”

Customer Grayson Lackey, of Lindale, said he’s been a fan of 1948 for a while and enjoys the shop’s environment.
