At the 1980 Tony Awards, Sandy Duncan was a nominee for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of the spunky title character in “Peter Pan.”
In the role, she was required to sing while swinging from cables suspended high above the stage. Although she didn’t win, the role helped establish her as one of stage’s popular performers.
Also at the 1980 Tony Awards, Tommy Tune, who attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, took home the Tony for Best Choreography for his work in “A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine.” He was nominated but did not win for directing the musical.
