Foster: Another Trump presidency means more lies, chaos

Donald Trump must be feeling like a cat with nine lives. Not only has he escaped jail sentencing so far on multiple convictions, he also dodged a would-be assassin last weekend on a Florida golf course. Luckily, the only shots fired were by Secret Service agents giving chase to the suspect.

The 58-year-old suspect was arraigned on weapons charges Monday and hasn’t released a statement about his involvement. Just like the previous attempt on Trump’s life about two months ago, I’ll wager his own campaign rhetoric may be the root cause for such hatred. But he has the nerve to blame the Harris-Walz campaign for inflammatory language.

Case in point is the totally false statement Trump made in his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris that Haitian immigrants are eating cats and dogs owned by residents of Springfield, Ohio.

The debate moderator quickly pointed out that the city manager of Springfield said there were no credible reports of such activity. But that didn’t deter Trump, who referenced the lie at a rally just a few days after the debate.

Media reports say that Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, pushed the rumor after hearing about it third-hand. Never mind there was no truth to the story, but the consequences have torn up the city and put Haitian immigrants there in jeopardy.

Bomb threats closed three schools and city hall. Both the city’s mayor and the Ohio governor have called for the threats to stop, but Trump and Vance are doubling down on spreading the lie.

Vance went so far to tell a CNN interviewer that if false stories would help move their campaign poll numbers up, he’s all for creating more lies. Such chaos on the domestic scene is reminiscent of Trump’s first term when he totally mismanaged the coronavirus, calling it a ”little flu” that would disappear quickly.

Trump is equally shameful in using dirty tactics to further his campaign, including his recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery. In case you missed the headlines, Trump was invited by a group of Gold Star families to lay a wreath in honor of the 13 service members killed by a terrorist bomb in the waning days of the war in Afghanistan. Trump’s staff later said Harris was invited to participate in the ceremony, but offered no proof.

The reason, of course, was Trump’s blatant disregard for a federal law prohibiting any political activities including photographs and filming at our hallowed national cemeteries. After the wreath laying where filming is allowed, Trump’s campaign staff headed to Section 60 where burials of deceased service members and casualties of the war on terrorism are laid to rest.

When they began filming and taking photos, a cemetery staffer stepped in and told them that activity wasn’t allowed. But she was shoved aside so they could continue filming. Sure enough, political TV ads showing his visit to Section 60 began airing on media outlets the very next day.

Trump’s team later said the cemetery worker had some kind of mental episode, but the U.S. Army issued a rare statement defending the staffer and laying the blame for the physical dust-up squarely on Trump and his campaign team.

So there you are, patriotic Americans, another demonstration of Cadet Bone Spurs’ total disregard for rules and regulations because he thinks he’s special and above the law.

Need I mention his conviction for sexual assault and continuing lies about it that put him on the hook for a $88 million judgment for defamation? And let’s not forget the conviction on 34 felony counts for business fraud in the state of New York where Trump can’t count on a federal pardon.

My fervent hope for the Nov. 5 election is that the remnants of the once proud and law-abiding members of the Republican Party will join ranks to vote for Harris. We can’t go back to more lies and chaos that were hallmarks of Trump’s four years in the White House.
