Business Beat: Openings, closures in October so far

Several businesses in the Tyler area have either closed, opened or expanded over the last month, reflecting ongoing shifts in the local economy.

Among them:


Chiangmai Thai Sushi

Chiangmai Thai Kitchen has two locations in Tyler. The restaurant at 5201 S. Broadway Ave. Suite #122 is temporarily closed, while the location at 8934 S. Broadway Ave. Suite #480 remains open. The restaurant is known for using fresh ingredients and a variety of herbs and spices in its dishes.

Chinese Dim Sum

Chinese Dim Sum in Tyler, which opened Feb. 3 at 109 E. Grande Blvd., closed Oct. 10 after eight months. The restaurant had replaced Cork Food and Drink, which closed in 2019.

Big Lots

The Big Lots at 1421 S. Beckham Ave. in Tyler has begun a going-out-of-business sale, although no closure date has been set. The South Broadway location in the French Quarter Shopping Center will remain open.

The retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month, leading to the closure of more than 300 stores nationwide. In other areas of East Texas, the Kilgore store is set to close, while the Longview location remains open.

The Gathering Cup

The Gathering Cup in Tyler, located at 5100 Chandler Hwy., held its soft opening last week. The café offers espresso, cold brew, drip coffee, Rishi organic teas, Tractor organic beverages and grab-and-go food items.

Drinks are made with organic syrups and sauces from Oregon-based Holy Kakow. The café’s name was inspired by Hebrews 10:24-25, which encourages gathering and supporting one another.

Starbucks

The grand opening of a new Starbucks in the Robert R. Muntz Library at UT Tyler, 3900 University Blvd., was celebrated on Oct. 9. The event included a performance by the UT Tyler Spirit Squad and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Dunkin’ Donuts

Dunkin’ Donuts on Oct. 16 held the grand opening of its new location at 5012 Troup Hwy, next to Walmart. It was previously supposed to open earlier but had to postpone due to delays in paperwork. During the opening, the store will offer giveaways and special deals. Management is also looking for new team members and thanked customers for their patience during the delay.

Celso’s Mexican Restaurant

Celso’s Mexican Restaurant opened its doors at 1015 W. Gentry Pkwy in Tyler. The restaurant offers authentic Guerrerense recipes and flavors. For to-go orders, customers can call 903- 266-9265.

Jucys Taco

Jucys Taco, an offshoot of Jucys Hamburgers with five locations in East Texas, opened its new location in Tyler at 2701 Old Henderson Hwy.

Rotolo’s Pizzeria

Rotolo’s Pizzeria is now available in downtown Tyler at True Vine on the Square, 110 N. College Ave. Suite #102. The casual Italian restaurant, with its main location at 8970 S. Broadway Ave., Ste. 148, is known for its fresh ingredients and friendly service. It partnered with True Vine on the Square to offer pizza by the slice alongside a selection of beer and wine. The new collaboration opened to customers last week.

McAlister’s Deli

A second McAlister’s Deli is set to open in Tyler, according to a permit filed with the city. The new location will occupy the former Which Wich Superior Sandwiches shop at 5868 Old Jacksonville Highway, Suite 700.

The permit was issued on Aug. 12 and approved on Sept. 30. McAlister’s Deli currently has one location in Tyler at 4325 Old Bullard Road. An opening date has not been announced yet.
