Boys Basketball Notebook: LaPoyonor’s Cort Reid, Canton’s Kaden Smith take weekly honor

LaPoynor’s Cort Reid and Canton’s Kaden Smith have earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Boys Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played Nov. 18-23.

Reid averaged 31.8 points and 8.2 rebounds in five wins over Pineywoods Community Academy (twice), Cushing, Chireno and state-ranked Brookeland to win the Wells Tournament.

Reid had 40 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals against PCA and then had 40 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals against Cushing. He had 28 points and 12 rebounds against Chireno. He had 25 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in another win over PCA. He finished with 26 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals in the championship win against Brookeland.

Smith averaged 31.5 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in wins over Kaufman and Corsicana. He had 37 points and seven assists against Canton.

In other outstanding performances in the area last week (nominated by coaches):



Tyler Legacy’s Jayden Jones averaged 17.0 points and 5.8 rebounds as the Red Raiders went 2-4. Ja’Corian Oes averaged 15.6 points and 8.0 rebounds.

Tyler’s Jaishua Brown had 32 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a 67-58 win over Mansfield Legacy. Geo Mitchell had 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Grace Community senior guard Caden Swaim averaged 16.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.0 steals and 4.0 assists as the Cougars went 4-1. He also had a game-winner over Pine Tree.

Brook Hill’s Beck Langemeier averaged 20.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists in the Union Grove Tournament.

Brownsboro’s Mann Scott averaged 27.5 points per game, 3.0 3-pointers, 5.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals against North Lamar and White Oak.

Tyler HEAT’s Coen Starr averaged 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds against Bishop Gorman and Athens. Kedren Penney had 12 points and six rebounds against Gorman. Waker Hartman had 20 points and seven rebounds against Athens, and Aiden Shelton had 14 points.

Frankston’s Jake Westbrook had 18 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, and he scored his 1,000th career point.

Mabank’s Luke Carter averaged 22.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists, and he shot 41 percent from 3-point range and 86 percent from the free-throw line as Mabank took wins over Rains, Fayetteville, Huckabay and Port Aransas and lost to Lipan. He had 36 points, 11 rebounds and five 3-pointers in a win over Rains. He also hit five threes against Fayetteville. He surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career and was named to the Port Aransas All-Tournament Team.

Rains’ Ty Kirby had 12 points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists in a 51-23 win over Quitman.

Alto’s Tim Bond averaged 12.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.4 steals. Derek Jordan averaged 10.0 points. JJ Rollins averaged 12.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.4 blocks.
