Boys Basketball Notebook: Grace Community’s Daniel Shankle takes weekly honor

Grace Community’s Daniel Shankle has earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Boys Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played Dec. 23-28.

Shankle, a senior, averaged 25.0 points, 6.0 assists, 4.0 steals and 4.0 rebounds in wins over Bishop Gorman and Henderson in the Wagstaff Holiday Classic.

Shankle had 26 points, six rebounds and four assists in a 79-64 win over Gorman. Shankle then had 24 points in an 89-50 victory against Henderson.

In other outstanding performances in the area last week (nominated by coaches):

Tyler Legacy’s Jayden Jones averaged 19.25 points and 5.0 rebounds as the Red Raiders went 3-1 in the Allen In-N-Out Burger Holiday Invitational. Ja’Corian Oes averaged 14.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.25 assists.



Grace Community junior Doak Porter averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals in wins over Bishop Gorman and Henderson while guarding the opponent’s top perimeter player.

Bullard’s Layne Alexander averaged 19.25 points, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game as the Panthers went 2-2 in the Van tournament.

Hawkins’ Brayden Givens averaged 19.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 6.0 steals per game in the Hawkins Holiday Hoops Tournament. Givens had 31 points, 11 rebounds and four steals in the championship game.

Mabank’s Luke Carter averaged 17.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists as the Panthers finished third in the bronze bracket of the Allen tournament. Carter Sims averaged 15.0 points and 5.8 rebounds, and Daylon Gibbs averaged 12.5 points and 3.3 rebounds.

There were no new state rankings this week because of the holidays.
