Tyler, Grace, HEAT go 2-0 in 70th Wagstaff Holiday Classic

Three Rose City squads finished unbeaten as the 70th Wagstaff Holiday Classic concluded on Saturday on the Tyler Junior College campus.
Tyler High, Grace Community and Tyler HEAT won on Saturday to compile 2-0 marks in the basketball tournament that is held each year between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Earning 1-1 records were All Saints, Whitehouse, Brownsboro, Bishop Gorman and Brook Hill. Henderson and Cumberland Academy were 0-2.
TYLER 49, BROOK HILL 35
Tyler High concluded the 2024 portion of its schedule with the win over Brook Hill in a spirited contest that wrapped up the tournament.
The Lions held the Guard to two points in the second quarter to forge a 24-15 halftime lead. Both teams were hitting in the third period, but Tyler maintained the lead, taking a 42-29 advantage heading to the final period.
Geordon Mitchell, Tyler’s 6-1 senior guard, led the Lions in scoring with 17 points, while teammates Keiland Garvey and Jaishua Brown had double- doubles. Mitchell also had three steals, three boards and a block.
Mitchell had three 3-pointers on his scoreline. Garvey, a 6-0 senior guard, added 12 points and 10 rebounds with Brown, a 6-5 senior forward, contributing 11 points and 10 boards. Brown added five blocks and two steals and Garvey had three blocks and two steals. Both Brown and Garvey had 3-pointers.

Jasyn Grayson was one point and one board shy of a trio of Lions having double-doubles. The 6-4 junior had nine points and nine rebounds. He also had three steals and a block.
Cameron Singleton added four rebounds and two steals.
Beck Langemeier, a 6-2 senior guard, led the Guard with 17 points, including 11 in the second half. He had a 3-pointer, while grabbing five rebounds and garnering two steals.
Also contributing were 6-6 sophomore guard Majus Afanasjev (10 points, 2 3-pointers, 3 rebounds), 6-8 junior forward Roy Rudzinskas (4 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal) and 5-9 sophomore guard Jio Orrico (4 points, 4 rebounds).
Junior guard Holt Robertson drew two charges, while freshman forward Zac Ryle drew a charge.
Brook Hill (18-3) will play Dallas Christian on Friday at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Later that night, the Dallas Mavericks will host the Cleveland Cavaliers in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
Tyler (13-8) also returns to play on Friday, hosting Hallsville in a key District 10-5A contest. The contest is the second game of a doubleheader. The Lady Lions meet Hallsville at 1:15 p.m., followed by the Lions at 2:30 p.m.
GRACE 89, HENDERSON 50
Five Cougars hit in double figures in leading Grace Community to the win over Henderson.
Daniel Shankle (5-7 senior guard) led the way with 24 points, followed by Doak Porter (18), Peyton Kelly (13), Jack Crawford (11) and Brady Luce (10).
Also scoring for Grace were Caden Swaim (6), Ian Murenzi (4), McCade Stinson (2) and Coben Williams (1).
Senior Trevor Kind led the Lions with 18 points.
Other Henderson players scoring were Ayden Perry (7), Caiden Johnson (6), Cardell Tatum (6), Brailon Walker (5), Jaxson Bradford (4), La’Kelton Freeney (2) and Vince Howard (2).
Grace improves to 14-8 while Henderson falls to 1-15.
TYLER HEAT 74, ALL SAINTS 43
Eleven Tyler HEAT players scored as the squad improved to 20-2 on the season.
Coen Starr (6-0 senior) paced his team with 17 points (3 3-pointers), followed by Eli Anderson (14 points, 1 3-pointer) and Aiden Shelton (13 points, 3 3-pointers).
Also scoring for HEAT were John Hall (8 points, 2 3-pointers), Waker Hartman (6 points, 2 3-pointers), Ben Holmes (3 points, 1 3-pointer), Trey Madrid (3 points, 1 3-pointer), Jet Bell (3 points, 1 3-pointer), Kedren Penney (3 points, 1 3-pointer), Ben Tiemann (2) and Nathan Barnes (2 points).
Starr and Anderson each had five steals with Penney grabbing five rebounds. Hall had three steals.
Caz Franks led All Saints with a double-double — 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also drew three charges.
Following Franks were Sachit Basoor (11 points, 2 3-pointers), Trey Newsome (8 points, 2 3-pointers), Tate Sully (8 points, 2 3-pointers), Emerson Hadnot (2 points) and Mason Patrick (2 points).
Manny Mizer grabbed seven rebounds for the Trojans (7-4).
The two clubs are scheduled to meet again on Friday at Brookshire Gym on the All Saints campus. The game has a 6 p.m. scheduled start.
BISHOP GORMAN 75, CUMBERLAND 49
Elijah Coppock II hit for 18 points while Carlin Ifeadi and Ryan Richbourg each connected for 15 points as the Crusaders scored the win.
BG outscored the Knights 26-2 in the third quarter for a 65-23 heading into the final period. Cumberland had a good fourth quarter, outscoring the Cru 26-10.
Others scoring for the Crusaders were Jaylon Miles (9), John Coan (6), Beau Bender (6), Matthias Kimec (4) and Evan Thibodeaux (2).
The Knights (6-10) were led by Ahmad Farrah (16) and Timo Simmons (15).
Also scoring for CA were Alex Mayo (8), Byron Gibson (5) and Kendrick Abbey (5).
The Crusaders improve to 14-4.
BROWNSBORO 53, WHITEHOUSE 31
In a matchup of old rivals, Brownsboro scored the victory over the Wildcats.
After leading 23-18 at halftime, the Bears pulled away in the second half.
Mann Scott (6-1 senior) led Brownsboro with 19 points, including two 3-pointers, along with six rebounds and two steals.
Keaton Delaney (6-3 senior) was right behind Scott with 18 points. He had two 3-pointers, along with six boards and two steals.
Others scoring for the Bears were Jacob Fulgham (8 points, 1 3-pointer, 6 rebounds), Peyton Brockway (6 points, 9 rebounds) and Amry Parmer (2 points, 2 rebounds).
Gabe Hendricks had 11 rebounds and four steals with Lane Shaw grabbing six boards.
Ace Olivares and Kadavian Pickens led the Wildcats with eight points each.
Also scoring for WHS were Layne Hooker (6), Chris Sturns (3), Kade Richardson (3), Preston Buckley (2) and Colton Seale (1)
Olivares had two 3-pointers with Sturns adding one trey.
The Bears (9-9) are scheduled to visit Lindale for a District 15-4A contest at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Whitehouse (6-11) travels to Texarkana on Tuesday to meet Texas High in a 10-5A game. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
