Girls Basketball Notebook: Palestine’s Sydney Hughes takes weekly honor

Palestine sophomore Sydney Hughes has earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Girls Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played Dec. 9-14.

Hughes averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.5 steals in wins over Marlin and Grapeland.

Hughes had 20 points, 12 rebounds and six steals in the 49-29 victory over Marlin. In a 66-39 decision against Grapeland, Hughes had 24 points, four rebounds and five steals.

In other outstanding performances in the area last week (nominated by coaches):

Canton senior Allison Rickman had 16 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and five assists in a district-opening win over Brownsboro. The North Texas signee is averaging 17.0 points and 13.0 rebounds for Canton (13-4, 1-0) with three of the losses coming to teams ranked in the top five in the state of their respective classes.



Bishop Gorman sophomore Amelia Meads averaged 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.0 block per game in wins over Dallas Yavneh (51-43) and Daingerfield (64-18).

Hawkins’ Taetum Smith averaged 18.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 9.5 steals per game in wins over Ore City (64-10) and McLeod (51-7).
