A Tyler woman was booked into the Smith County Jail after firing a weapon at law enforcement and setting fire to a travel trailer. Rachel Marie Shell, 35, of Tyler, was booked on seven counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, failure to identify and arson.

Deputies were dispatched to 6189 Horseshoe Lane, early Wednesday morning, Jan, 8, after a woman was reported causing damages to property. Upon arrival the voice of the women along with crashing noises were heard inside the travel trailer. Deputies were informed Shell had access to an air rifle, and a .22 caliber firearm inside the trailer.

While attempting to contact Shell, she began firing a weapon at the deputies and

refused to exit the camper despite clear and distinct commands for her to do so. A perimeter was established around the trailer to safeguard nearby citizens and responding law enforcement.

Shell continued shooting toward the deputies from inside the trailer. She then started a fire in the trailer while still inside. The fire quickly spread, and she exited from the front door with what appeared to be a rifle.

She quickly dropped the rifle and was taken into custody without further incident. No one was injured due to the gunfire.

The fire continued to spread, and the trailer became fully engulfed. Chapel Hill, Jackson Heights, Winona and Red Springs Fire Departments responded to the location as well as the Smith County Fire Marshall’s Office and UT Health EMS.

The fire was extinguished by responding agencies and no other trailers were damaged.
