ET Cross Country: Union Grove girls win 9th straight title

The Union Grove Lady Lions earned their ninth straight district championship on Friday, finishing with 27 points to earn the District 21-2A championship.

The team will advance to the Class 2A Region II meet set for Oct. 24 in Huntsville.

The Lady Lions will look to qualify for the UIL State Cross Country Meet for the fourth year in a row. Team members are Sophie Pyle, Ava Wightman, Jenna Scott, Keira Taylor, Gracelyn Head, Rachel Potter, Danica Vestal and Averi Cook.

Union Grove’s Isaiah O’Neal finished sixth and David Shavers seventh on Friday to qualify for the regional meet.

The Union Grove JV girls won the district team title, and Josiah Sturkie was third among JV boys.



In the Junior High girls division, Union Grove’s Landry Harris placed first and Susanna Sturkie sixth. Harris placed first in all five meets this season.

In the Junior High boys division, Ryder Martindale was fourth and Brady Pritchett eighth for Union Grove.

Ore City finished second to Union Grove in the varsity girls division with 61 points, followed by Harleton (92), Hawkins (92), Big Sandy (102) and McLeod (111).

Wightman finished first overall with a time of 12:25.66. Pyle was second at 13:40.35, followed by Vestal (13:46.16), Melanie Pantoja of Harleton (13:48.03), Lindsay Ipock of Harleton (13:49.05), Amira Meeks of Hawkins (13:51.45), Potter (13:56.48), Ivon Garay of Ore City (13:57.15), Faith Allen of Big Sandy (13:59.97) and Lesly Dominguez of Ore City (14:02.39) to round out the top 10.

On the varsity boys side, Hawkins won the team title with 55 points, followed by Harleton (57), McLeod (60), Ore City (78) and Union Grove (87).

Hawkins’ Dakota Hinkle won the individual title with a time of 16:54.09. Braedon Glennen-Lovvorn of Harleton was second at 17:57.50, followed by Toby Gwin of Hawkins (18:04.66), Dylan Bouchard of McLeod (18:09.66), Maverick Main of Ore City (18:30.10), O’Neal (18:50.35), Shaver (18:54.31), Jase Deaton of McLeod (19:13.85), Landen Mrdak of Hawkins (19:14.45) and Kiearie Stoker of Harleton (19:15.63) to finish out the top 10.
