TxDOT prepares East Texas roads for winter weather

Cold weather is moving into East Texas this week, and Texas Department of Transportation crews have been preparing the region’s roadways for winter weather.
Temperatures in the area could sink were expected to sink the low 20s by Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in Shreveport. Some wintry precipitation is possible.

Interstate 20 and other major roadways throughout the area have been coated with a brine solution that helps keep ice and snow from adhering to road surfaces.
Transportation crews have prepared equipment and materials to treat roadways as needed, and they’re working with law enforcement and the National Weather Service to get the information they need to prepare for winter storms, officials said in a statement.
TxDOT crews pre-treated bridges and other areas prone to wind and ice across the eight-county district. Pre-treatment efforts began last week.
Crews have also prepared equipment and materials to treat additional roadways as needed. TxDOT is coordinating efforts with local municipalities and law enforcement while monitoring weather forecasts in partnership with the National Weather Service.

Drivers are reminded to:

Avoid unnecessary travel during inclement weather;
Use extra care when driving on bridges, overpasses, ramps, turns and shaded areas that freeze first;
Drive at slower speeds and allow extra time for travel;
Increase the distance between their cars and other cars on the roadway;
Stay back at least 200 feet from vehicles treating roadways;
Move over for emergency vehicles; and
Stay in their vehicles and call 911 if they become stranded.
If a vehicle begins to slide, the driver should ease off the gas pedal or brakes and steer into the direction of the skid;
If stranded, remain in your vehicle and call 911 for assistance.
