An image of America at Greenberg

Just before Thanksgiving Day, I had a most heartening experience at Greenberg Turkeys, Tyler’s legendary purveyor — nationwide — of the very best smoked turkey. I had motored to its headquarters on McMurrey Drive to pick up a preordered 6-pounder. The place was hopping, with a line out the door and people steadily emerging with one or more boxes of the turkey (available in sizes up to 16 pounds), and through the glass I could see that a couple dozen operators in the call center were busy. Everybody at the Tyler facility was smiling broadly — both the staff and the customers.

What’s more, all these customers looked like America: Black, brown and white people all mixing and mingling and joining in doing the same thing, without any problem and all experiencing the same joy and anticipation of eating a Greenberg turkey.

Why can’t this be the model for our nation — with good food for everybody, all sorts and conditions of people, irrespective of income level, regardless even of ability to work, come one and come all, not in friction and not just coexisting but joined in common enterprise, thankful for everybody and everything, and happy to be part of a diverse and inclusive community?

Bruno’s original location will be missed

1976 began the birth of a new taste of pizza and pasta in Tyler. Its name was Bruno’s Pizza at 1400 South Vine.

John Walter and Josephine Rumbelow put their hearts in their craft. Their motto was good food, Good service and always a fervent spirit.

One of Tyler’s oldest locally-owned restaurants announced the closing of its Vine Street location, and many regulars are deeply saddened.

This was a favorite eating place and was convenient to many. Noon meals drew many trades, people like electricians, plumbers, Tyler ISD maintenance, city police , fire, and parks employees, and many other workers ate there often. It was like one big family.

Weekends drew in families and many sports teams from little league to soccer and more.

Tylerites want Lori and employees of longtime service to know your kindness shall be missed at the old original location. The spirit of friendship and sharing has always been felt. Thank you for your example always shown to the community, for your actions speak louder than words can express.

The good news you can keep up your reputation at the second location, at 15770 Old Jacksonville.

Remember, seven days without Bruno’s makes one weak.
