Girls Basketball Notebook: Palestine’s Ja’Yanna Johnson captures weekly award

Palestine’s Ja’Yanna Johnson has earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Girls Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played Dec. 11-16.
Johnson averaged 22.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in two games for Palestine.
She had 15 points and three rebounds against Lovelady and then followed with 29 points and five rebounds in a win over Brook Hill.
In other outstanding performances in the area last week (nominated by coaches):
Brownsboro’s Khayla Garrett had 23 points, three rebounds, three assists and no turnovers and was 3 of 4 from 3-point range in a win over Van. Tiykeah McKenzie had 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Van senior Landry Jones averaged 21.5 points, 6.0 steals and 4.0 rebounds.
Hawkins junior Taetum Smith averaged 18.0 points 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 11.0 steals per game, getting four consecutive double-doubles.
Martin’s Mill freshman Mckenna Wise scored a team-high 12 points and had 10 rebounds in a 43-27 win over Jacksonville.
Canton sophomore Chloe Howe averaged 17.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in wins over Lindale and Mabank, and she made six 3-pointers.
