Baseball Notebook: Van’s Grady Baetz, Overton’s Braxton Harper take weekly honors

Van’s Grady Baetz and Overton’s Braxton Harper have earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Baseball Player of the Week honors for games played Feb. 17-22.

Baetz was chosen as the Pitcher of the Week, and Harper was selected as the Hitter of the Week.



Baetz picked up a win, allowing no earned runs on four hits with 15 strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Harper went 6-for-7 (.857) with three doubles, eight RBIs, five runs, three walks and five stolen bases.

PITCHING

Whitehouse senior Winn Harriss went 2-0, allowing no runs on three hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk in nine innings.

Arp junior Isaac Poe closed out four tournament games, allowing no runs on two hits with one strikeout and no walks, throwing 41 pitches in two innings.

LaPoynor’s Kaden McKinley made two starts, allowing one earned run on four hits with 21 strikeouts in nine innings.

HITTING

Tyler Legacy’s Cale Zips went 8-for-16 (.500) with four doubles, one triple, eight RBIs and three runs. Noah Felton went 7-for-15 (.467) with 17 RBIs. Nolan Hable went 6-for-14 (.429) with eight runs, five walks and three stolen bases. Simeon Garner went 5-for-12 (.417) with a double, a triple, six RBIs, five runs and four walks.

Van senior Austin Stephenson hit .368 with seven hits, three RBIs, seven runs, a walk, a hit by pitch and seven stolen bases.

Arp freshman Adan Ponce went 3-for-5 (.600) with two RBIs, two runs and four walks.

Troup’s Logan Lockey went 6-for-13 (.462) with four doubles and seven RBIs.

Cayuga junior Cash Conner went 6-for-12 (.500) with three doubles, seven RBIs, six runs, three walks and a stolen base. Junior Gus Wilfong went 5-for-11 (.454) with two doubles, eight RBIs, six runs and two walks.

East Texas teams ranked in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association rankings are Hallsville No. 6 in 5A; Spring Hill No. 2 and Pleasant Grove No. 4 in 4A; and Liberty-Eylau No. 1 and Huntington No. 9 in 3A. Also receiving votes are Central Heights, Diboll and Tatum in 3A; and Garrison in 2A.
