15-4A Basketball: Lindale girls, Van boys win in district doubleheader

LINDALE — It was a split decision in a District 15-4A doubleheader between Lindale and Van on Tuesday night with both winning teams getting standout individual performances.
In the girls’ game, Ella Hutchens had 17 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, seven blocks and four steals to lead the Lindale Lady Eagles to 51-25 victory over the Van Lady Vandals. In the boys’ game, Caden Rowe had 28 points, 11 rebounds and five steals as the Vandals took a key 61-35 win over the Eagles.
GIRLS
Lindale’s defense made it tough on Van throughout the contest.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead, holding Van scoreless for the first 7:23 of the first quarter before an Olivia Ryan free throw. A Lanna Tschirhart bucket with five seconds on the clock was the first field goal for the Lady Vandals, cutting the score to 7-3 after the first quarter.
Down 13-3, Van got a triple from Keeley Walker and a free throw by Landry Guy to cut the score to 13-7. Lindale ended the half on an 11-1 run as Elise Pierce made a runner at the buzzer to send the Lady Eagles into halftime with a 24-8 lead.
Van was held without a field goal in the third quarter, getting all of its points at the free-throw line, as Lindale stretch its lead to 24, 36-12.
The Lady Eagles opened the fourth quarter on a 14-0 run before Van scored 13 points in the final 3:19 of the game.
Ryan had 9 points and five rebounds for Van (11-21, 3-9). Jayla Thomas had 6 points and 11 rebounds. Walker had 5 points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Other scorers for Lindale (16-15, 7-5) were Madison Devisscher 9; Kennedy Miller 6; Ma’Kaylin Smith 6; Kaylea Williams 4; Elise Pierce, Kortlen Pierce, Abigail Lee and Abbigail Hanley all with 2; and Ava Grogam 1. Miller had six rebounds and six steals. Smith had five steals, and Devisscher had four steals.
The Lady Eagles will open the playoffs against Chapel Hill at 7:15 p.m. Monday at UT Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center.
BOYS
Rowe scored all 12 of Van’s points in the first quarter as the Vandals took an early 12-6 lead.
David Lindig scored on a drive for Lindale, and Ty McCoy hit a 3-pointer just before time expired to cut the score to 12-11 after the first quarter.
McCoy opened the second quarter with another triple to give Lindale a 14-12 lead before Van answered with an 11-1 run. The Vandals went into halftime with a 27-20 lead as Rowe had a tip-in at the buzzer.
The Vandals held Lindale without a field goal for more than six minutes to start the third quarter to go on a 15-1 run without any points from Rowe, who had 18 in the first half. Van led 44-26 after three quarters.
Rowe added 10 more points in the fourth quarter, including consecutive dunks, the latter on a lob from Rawly Hinch.
Other scorers for Van (19-11, 4-6) were Weston Proctor 6; Rawly Hinch and Kamron Jones 5 each; Easton Hinch, Andrew Flodder and Ryder Savage all with 4; Austin Moffatt 3; and Seth Long 2. Rawly Hinch had six rebounds and four assists. Easton Hinch had five assists and three steals, and Long had three assists and three steals.
McCoy led Lindale (12-18, 4-7) with 12 points. Heath Miller had 10. Landon Buck scored 7, and Lindig, Davis Carnathan and Evan Cockrell all had 2.
Van will play at Kemp on Friday before hosting undefeated Athens on Feb. 11. Lindale is off until hosting Kemp in the regular season finale on Feb. 11. Brownsboro and Van are currently tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in 15-4A with Lindale a half-game back.
