A Longview man was arrested Monday after authorities say he hit a New Diana ISD student with his vehicle.

Jerry Okeith Martin was held in the Upshur County Jail on $100,000 bond, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Martin was driving Monday morning on FM 726 in Upshur County when a student was crossing the road to board a New Diana ISD school bus, said Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Adam Albritton. New Diana school officials said the incident occurred around 6:50 a.m.

In a statement Monday morning, school officials said the driver of the vehicle, now identified as Martin, “failed to stop for a school bus that was stopped with its red loading lights flashing” and “swerved to avoid hitting the student directly.” The student was clipped by the vehicle’s side mirror. The student’s mother reportedly witnessed the incident.

The student was transported to Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview with what were presumed to be minor injuries, according to the district.
