The United Way of Smith County on Jan. 30 celebrated its fifth annual Leadership Dinner at Willow Brook Country Club. The event brought together 160 attendees, including leadership givers, local executives, and nonprofit leaders to honor the collective impact made across Smith County.

This year’s event recognized Herbert C. Buie for his outstanding philanthropic endeavors and lifelong dedication to serving the Tyler and East Texas communities.

The event’s speakers included Bob Garrett, President of Fair Oil Company; Scott Martinez, President and CEO of the Tyler Economic Development Council; and Ward Huey, United Way Board Chair.

Garrett, a longtime friend, introduced the award with a heartfelt recounting of Buie’s journey, from his humble beginnings with a paper route at age 10 to his leadership roles at Tyler Packing Company and the Tyler Economic Development Council.

Garrett also highlighted Buie’s military service during the Korean War and his steadfast commitment to organizations, including the United Way of Smith County, the East Texas Food Bank, and the East Texas State Fair.

Martinez provided the audience with an update on the development and growth in the Tyler area, weaving in mentions of Buie’s involvement and impact on each project. His presentation highlighted how Buie’s leadership and vision played an instrumental role in shaping key initiatives that have contributed to the community’s progress.

John Gaston, President and CEO of the United Way of Smith County, expressed his admiration, saying, “There has never been a finer man, a finer leader, and more of a community-oriented leader than Herb Buie. His legacy of generosity and service will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Buie accepted the honor with humility, sharing his philosophy on life and service.

“It’s not how high you stack the stack of resources, it’s how broad you scatter it. You brought nothing into this world, and you will take nothing out. But you can do a lot of good things while you’re here,” Buie said.

He also referenced Matthew 6:33, emphasizing the importance of seeking righteousness and serving others.

The United Way of Smith County’s Leadership Dinner not only celebrates individual achievements but also highlights the power of collective action. Through the generosity and commitment of leaders like Buie, the United Way continues to address critical needs and improve lives across the region.
