An East Texas school district’s superintendent has been named as a lone finalist at another district.

Damenion Miller, currently the superintendent at Winona ISD, on Monday night was named as the lone finalist for Crockett ISD’s superintendent of schools.

Crockett ISD confirmed the news in a post on their official website page.

By state law, the district will have to wait 21 days before offering Miller a contract.

Miller was selected to become Winona’s superintendent in March 2020 after being appointed that January to serve as interim superintendent for the district. Miller was principal of the high school and assistant superintendent prior to his appointment to head the district.

The district has flourished under Miller’s leadership, earning grants, awards and improved accountability ratings.

“Under my leadership, we have made significant strides in areas such as operations, curriculum development, and financial management,” Miller states in his superintendent letter on the district’s website. “Our district has received the highest academic rating in 20 years, and we continue to make improvements across all campuses.”

Miller also notes the successful passage of a $13.5 million bond and “careful financial management,” which he said have allowed the district to invest in important programs, staff, and infrastructure improvements.

Miller was principal at Winona High School from 2016 to 2020 and assistant superintendent of the district from 2017 to 2020. He has been an educator for more than two decades.

Previously in his career, Miller spent 11 years at Quitman ISD as a coach of various sports and director of technology, a year at Chapel Hill ISD as assistant head football coach and five years at Tyler ISD’s Moore Magnet School as assistant principal.

Cody Mize was Winona ISD’s previous superintendent.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph will continue to follow this story and report on the Winona ISD Board of Trustees’ plans to selecting a new superintendent.
