LINDALE — Four Lindale student-athletes signed to play at the college level for three different sports on Wednesday afternoon inside the Lindale Performing Arts Center.
Seth Baggett will play football at Tyler Junior College. Trey Rozell will play football at Henderson State University. Callie Schmidt will play volleyball at Hill College. Kenzie McClenny will play golf at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Baggett, a kicker, will stay close to home to play for the Apaches.
“On the visit, it just felt like home,” Baggett said. “Being close to home was important. I know the area, and I really like the coaches.”
Baggett, also a soccer player, said he had no interest in playing football. His freshman year, he earned the starting kicker job on the varsity, and in his first game, he kicked a 28-yard field goal in the final seconds to lift the Eagles to a 31-29 road win over Pine Tree.
As a senior, Baggett was 10 of 13 on field goals with a long of 47 yards. He made 45 of his 46 extra-point attempts. He had 70 kickoffs with 44 touchdowns. He punted 43 times for an average of 38 yards with a long of 61 yards. Baggett was the District 9-4A Special Teams Player of the Year.
“I would say they’re getting a guy that can be a weapon for them,” Lindale head football coach Chris Cochran said. “Whether it’s kickoffs or field goals or punting, he can just do so much. He’s just so versatile as a kicker and a punter. They’re also getting a guy who is going to be a great teammate and is going to be very invested. For four years, he poured everything he has into Lindale football and Lindale soccer.”
Baggett said he is undecided on a major.
Rozell, an offensive lineman, is headed to Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
“I think the culture is very similar to Lindale,” Rozell said. “The coaching staff is awesome. Academics are a big deal there, too.”
“They’re getting a guy that’s going to bust his tail every single day,” Cochran said. “He’s gritty. He’s tough. He’s a guy that cares a whole lot. He’s going to pour everything he has into it. He played through a lot of stuff, hurt shoulder, knee, but he understood that’s what an offensive lineman does, you just kind of have to play through stuff. The other thing I would say about him is he loves the game of football. They’re getting a guy that really enjoys to play the game. They’re getting a good one.”
Rozell said he wants to be a firefighter EMT.
Schmidt, a defensive specialist, is headed to Hillsboro.
“I really love the campus and atmosphere, and all the girls were very welcoming, and I just knew right away that’s where I wanted to go,” Schmidt said.”
Schmidt finished her senior season with 194 digs and a 2.1 pass rate.
“When I think about her four years here, I never once had to coach her on attitude or effort,” Lindale head volleyball coach Jessica Dimsdle said. “They’re getting someone that will run through a wall for them and do everything that they ask with a good attitude. She’s very skilled and just works hard, and she loves the game.”
Schmidt said she is undecided on a major.
McClenny is headed to Monticello, Arkansas.
“I met the coach and the team, and they were just great people and super nice and welcoming,” McClenny said. “I felt like it was going to a good environment. It felt a lot like home and not too far.”
McClenny has advanced to the UIL State Golf Tournament in Class 4A the past three years.
“They’re getting an incredible student-athlete,” Lindale head golf coach Lindsay Kelly said. “Anyone that knows Kenzie knows that she puts so much effort into everything she does in the classroom, on the golf course and in life. They’re getting a great girl, a great golfer and a great student.”
McClenny plans to major in business and management.
