The Board of Directors of the Judge Quincy Beavers Jr. Foundation announced their first scholarship recipient.

The first scholarship was awarded in December to Adrianna Evans, a freshman currently attending Howard University in Washington, D.C. with a strong commitment of becoming a mental health therapist.

The foundation was initially incorporated in 2022 and was created primarily to raise funds to provide scholarships to students who have an interest in attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

The initial mission for the foundation was to honor the legacy of former Judge Quincy Beavers, Jr., who served as Justice of the Peace for Precinct One of Smith County since 1995 for over 27 years.

Judge Beavers was a dedicated former law enforcement officer and public servant who was actively involved with several community educational programs while mentoring students who were interested in criminal justice careers and exposing them as to how they too could help make a difference in today’s society. He believes when the community works together, everyone can make a difference.

Evans realized the need for her to be in an academic environment, while training for her career, that promoted Black mental health and research opportunities because of the shortage of trained therapists.

“We are very proud to present this scholarship to Adrianna to assist with her educational journey as she pursues her mental health therapy career,” said Dr. Pamela Phoenix, the foundation President. “We recognize that she will be a great asset because of her commitment to help others.”

The next scholarship award winner will be announced in June.
