For the fourth consecutive year, the Tyler Lions are in the postseason.

The Lions (20-12) take on Prosper Walnut Grove (27-9) on Tuesday in a Class 5A Division I bi-district basketball playoff game at North Forney High School (6170 Falcon Way, Forney, 75126). Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Tyler hopes to duplicate last week’s performance by the Lady Lions, who defeated Walnut Grove at the same location.

The Lions have been basically in a playoff situation since mid-January since a tough start to district.

Tyler then won five of their next six games and Justin Johnson’s club is in the postseason again.

After forging a tie for fourth place in District 10-5A after wins over Texas High (59-50 in Texarkana) and Mount Pleasant (52-50 on a buzzer-beating tip-in by Jasyn Grayson in Tyler), the Lions defeated Texas High 67-60 in a play-in game in Marshall on Friday.

Keiland Garvey sparked Tyler to win. The 6-0 senior guard who averages 7.6 points per game finished with 27 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and three steals.

Senior standout Jaishua Brown, who can play every position, scored 17 points.

Brown (6-5) leads the Lions with an average of 17.8 per game, while rebounding at 6.8 and dishing out 2.8 assists.

Other members of the Lions include: 6-2 senior forward Cameron Singleton; 6-2 senior forward Tayvean McMiller, 5-10 senior guard Alec Dewberry, 6-3 senior forward La’Tavion Golden and 6-1 senior forward Damien Yarbrough.

Also, junior Caden Granberry, who is the Lions’ quarterback on the football team, saw some action against the Tigers after Golden was injured in practice.

The Wildcats are led by 6-4 senior guard/forward Parker Evanson (13.1 ppg., 5.0 rpg) and 5-10 senior guard Byron Scott (11.8 ppg, 3.1 apg). Other top scorers are 5-11 junior guard Chase Brooks (7.4) and senior Mason Ward (7.3).

The only common opponent is Tyler Legacy. The Lions lost to the Red Raiders 59-48 on Nov. 25 and Walnut Grove split, winning 69-47 on Nov. 23 and falling to 64-54 on Dec. 6. Both games between the Wildcats and Red Raiders were in tournaments.

The winner between the Lions and Wildcats advances to area to meet the winner of Frisco Heritage (28-4) and Frisco Wakeland (22-12) later this week.
